Civic Literacy
After receiving a promotion at Ivinson Memorial Hospital from housekeeping to data analyst, my first project was to bring the hospital into compliance with the American Disabilities Act in regards to hearing impaired people. In the process of my research for compliancy, I came in contact with Lori Cielinski. She is the TRS/Deaf Services consultant for the Division of Vocational Rehab at the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services. Lori encouraged my to apply for membership on the Wyoming Telecommunications Relay System Advisory Committee to represent Albany, Carbon, and Sweetwater Counties. My application was accepted and I was appointed by the Governor of Wyoming to sit on this committee for 2 consecutive terms. The picture to the left is showing the plaque I received for serving on this state committee for five years.
The purpose of this committee is to determine yearly a surcharge on phone lines for the funding of the Wyoming Relay Service. The committee also participated in evaluating applications for telecommunication companies to provide operation of the relay service as well as testing phones for the distribution program.
I feel this is an example of my skills in civic literacy. I participated in a civic function that had an effect on telephone surcharges for Wyoming residents as well as an effect of telecommunication services for the hearing impaired.
